They waited until they could hear the television from the living room next door, then Zoe spoke.
āRory, whatās going on, and why have you been ignoring your mum?ā
Barbara inclined her head as if giving the floor to her son.
He cleared his throat. āIām sorry. To you, Mum, for not having a much-needed conversation, and to you, Zoe, for not telling you about it.ā
āAbout what?ā she asked, anxiety pricking at her stomach.
āThe wedding.ā
āThe wedding?ā she squeaked, her heart in her mouth. āAre you calling it off?ā
āOh god, no! Fuck no! Not at all! No!ā
āWhat is it then?ā she asked, her heart hammering.
āItās the guest list, the press, the stuff we havenāt planned.ā
āI donāt understand.ā
Barbara sighed. āZoe. I appreciate you feel this wedding should be your day, however, when you marry the Earl of Kinloch there are certain expectations.ā
āThere are? Like what?ā
āThis is a society wedding, and as such, society must be invited.ā
āWhat kind of society?ā
Rory reached for her hand. āWe donāt have to do any of this.ā
His mother ignored him, focusing her attention on Zoe.
āThe right kind, not gossip rag fodder who turn up to the opening of an envelope. You may not be aware, but my late husband had an extended family, and it is expected, as well as courteous, to invite them. The Foxbrookes, for example. Well, the legitimate ones at least.ā
āBut I donāt know them. This is myāour wedding.ā She glanced at Rory. āDo you want them there?ā
He rubbed his thumb across the back of her hand. āYou know what I think. I donāt care if itās just us and yourāour parents.ā He looked at his mother. āAll of this is irrelevant. We canāt afford it.ā
Barbara took a breath.
āNo,ā said Rory, cutting her off.
His mother pressed her lips together as if steeling herself to remain in control, then took a measured breath.
āI was going to suggest a compromise.ā
āCompromise?ā Zoe and Rory uttered in unison.
Barbara blinked. āUp until this year, my entire life has been a compromise,ā she replied icily.
āSorry,ā said Zoe.Ā
Barbara was right. Sheād had a difficult childhood, and the apparent victory at marrying Roryās father at the age of eighteen had come at a huge personal cost.
āI am suggesting you invite whoever you want to a few days of festivities leading up to the main event,ā Barbara began. āBradley has been enlightening me as to the American custom of holding a ārehearsal dinnerā, which would be an excellent way of having the kind of intimate celebration you seek. I understand the financial concerns when you still have an estate to manage, so my husband and I are offering to foot the bill for the entire wedding.ā She paused. āIn exchange for being able to add extra attendees to the wedding day itself.ā
āNo,ā replied Rory.
āHow many?ā asked Zoe, squeezing his hand. Even though theyād planned a small celebration, she would rather the money was put into the estate.
āFive hundred,ā Barbara replied.
āOh my god!ā
āNo, no, no,ā said Rory. āThatās nuts.ā
Barbara sighed. āIs it? Take the Foxbrookes. If you include the illegitimates, thatās ten people. And if any of the children are wed, that number only increases.ā
āNo,ā Rory repeated.
Zoe elbowed him. āOne hundred and fifty,ā she said to Barbara.
āFour hundred,ā she replied, her cornflower blue eyes glinting with victory. āAnd exclusive rights given to Vanity Fair or Vogue.ā
āZoeāā
āTwo hundred,ā said Zoe, cutting him off. āWe have a veto on all pictures and the fee goes to a charity of our choice.ā
āThree hundred and fifty, and the gift list is with Harrods.ā
āTwo hundred and twenty-five. No gift list, but charity donations encouraged.ā
āThree hundred. And your dress is couture.ā
āNo. Iāve already bought it. Two hundred and fifty, and whoever the Foxbrooke āillegitimatesā are, they still get an invite.ā
Barbara raised an eyebrow. āTwo hundred and seventy-five. Thatās my final offer.ā
āTwo hundred and fifty is mine.ā
Silence.
āDeal,ā said Barbara, extending her hand.
Zoe shook it.
Rory sighed and hung his head.
